Welcome to AWP University

Welcome to AWP University (AWP-U) , the vendor-neutral collaboration hub dedicated to Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) education and training delivery.

Founded in 2020 by Robin and Amber Mikaelsson, AWP-U is a family-run small business serving some of the largest and most respected industrial companies in the capital projects sector. Our mission is simple: to make world-class AWP training accessible, affordable, and relevant for organizations and individuals at every level of the industry.

Why We Exist

Too often, construction teams face the same challenges: fragmented training, inconsistent application of best practices, and the constant pressure of tighter budgets and schedules. At AWP-U, we’ve built a platform to tackle these pain points head-on: providing practical solutions grounded in decades of experience and a deep commitment to the industry.

We believe that everyone, from multinational corporations to small businesses and individual practitioners, deserves access to the skills needed to participate in the productivity revolution in construction.

Our Founding Story

AWP-U was created by Robin Mikaelsson, a lifelong advocate of Advanced Work Packaging. As an AWP Principal Consultant with Construct-X, Robin spent decades supporting AWP implementations on more than 100 projects worldwide. He has contributed as a volunteer with COAA since 2006 and with CII since 2009, helping shape the development of AWP Best Practice itself.

In July 2020, Robin survived a life-changing motorcycle accident. His long recovery created space to reflect on his career and reimagine how he could contribute to the industry. Out of this turning point, Robin partnered with Dr. Ted Blackmon (founder of Construct-X and Jovian Ventures) to establish a new kind of collaboration hub: one that was vendor-neutral, open, and inclusive.

Why Vendor-Neutral Matters

Many AWP training programs are tied to specific software tools or consultancy frameworks. While valuable, these approaches can frustrate corporations and practitioners, as toolsets often change from project to project.

That’s why AWP-U is committed to remaining vendor-neutral. We actively collaborate with multiple vendors and consultants, ensuring that learners gain skills and knowledge that are transferable across platforms and projects. This approach accelerates adoption and helps organizations avoid duplication of training.

Our Team

We’re proud to have Amber Mikaelsson as part of AWP-U’s leadership. Amber brings years of experience in administration, on-site safety training, marketing, and learning management system (LMS) development. Passionate about connecting communities through technology, she envisions AWP-U as a truly open platform: a place where consultants and vendors can work together to grow the practice of AWP in a consistent, high-quality way.
